Washable Puppy Pads or Disposable Ones – Determining Which Is Best

If you are like most dog owners who are only looking for a temporary housebreaking solution, then it’s not advisable for you to invest in a washable puppy pad.  You can simply purchase a bulk of disposable pads online or at your nearest pet store.

But then again if you opt for a permanent indoor potty training solution, then you definitely need the washable puppy pads. Depending on your home’s size and how often you want to change pads, you might need to purchase a dozen or two. You might find that you need to invest a lot in the beginning, but the investment will be worth it in the long run.

One of the reasons why some people opt for washable puppy pads is for environmental purposes. Apparently, less waste is involved when you use these pads since you can wash them and re-use for as long as necessary.

The downside though is that even if you don’t produce a lot of garbage with washable puppy pads, you will still be utilizing a lot of water and chemicals to clean them when you’re doing the laundry. So, if you look at the big picture, their claimed benefit for the environment isn’t really as strong as what most people say.

Disposable Puppy Pads – Advantages and Disadvantages

washable-wee-wee-padsWhen it comes to disposable puppy pads, its major drawback is that there’s a tendency that it could become a perfect target for teething puppies. Once they get the idea that the pads could be their toy, this could get in the way of your house training.

However, this will depend on every puppy. To avoid this incident, you need to be firm and allow him to only play with the puppy toys that you will provide. By doing this, he will learn to stay away from the puppy pads.

With washable puppy pads, one of the major disadvantages that come with them is the amount of stench they bring along with the mess that cling to them. But then again, this is the same with all types of pads, may it be disposable or washable.

To minimize the stench problem, you need to purchase a medium-sized garbage can with lid and store it in your laundry room. This is one of the things which you need to carefully consider, whether you are willing to deal with the maintenance of washable puppy pads. But despite everything, many dog owners still prefer to use these washable pads. So, chances are that you will eventually learn how to deal with them.
